Mahesh Babu’s upcoming film with S.S. Rajamouli is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated projects in Indian cinema. Touted to be a globetrotting action-adventure, the film is expected to set new benchmarks in the industry. However, one question that often arises when it comes to Mahesh Babu’s movies is the accuracy of box office numbers.

In the past, there have been several instances where Mahesh Babu’s team has been accused of inflating collections to project a blockbuster status. While this is not uncommon in the industry, the numbers presented often differ significantly from trade reports, leading to criticism from neutral audiences and trade analysts. With a director like Rajamouli—who has a track record of delivering genuine record-breaking hits—there is increased scrutiny on how box office figures will be reported this time.

Rajamouli’s films, from Baahubali to RRR, have always had strong credibility in terms of collections, as they are tracked closely by national and international trade circles. The question now is whether Mahesh Babu’s team will stick to realistic numbers or continue the trend of exaggerated figures. Given the scale and expectations surrounding this project, there is little need to manipulate collections, as it is bound to be a massive grosser anyway.

As the film gears up for production, all eyes will be on the promotional strategy and how the team presents box office data. Will they maintain transparency, or will the trend of inflated numbers continue? Only time will tell.

Exaggerated Box Office Numbers: A Pattern in Mahesh Babu’s Films?

Box office numbers have always been a hot topic in the film industry, with producers often inflating collections to create a perception of massive success. When it comes to Mahesh Babu’s films, this trend has been quite evident, especially in terms of Day-1 records. While stars like Prabhas operate in a different league with pan-Indian blockbusters, and Pawan Kalyan (PK) and NTR have been true rivals in the Day-1 records game, Mahesh Babu’s producers have often been accused of exaggerating figures to stay in the race.

A prime example is Bharat Ane Nenu, where the producer himself had to clarify on stage during the success meet that the numbers weren’t fake—an ironic move that only raised more eyebrows. More recently, Guntur Kaaram failed to cross ₹160 crore gross but still had a poster claiming ₹234 crore in just 10 days, misleading the audience and industry insiders.

The same tactics were applied to Sarkaru Vaari Paata and Sarileru Neekevvaru. The case of Sarileru Neekevvaru was particularly interesting because when its team released exaggerated figures, the makers of Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo countered by putting out their own “organic” collection poster—though it was widely believed that both films’ numbers were manipulated to one-up each other.

One of the biggest concerns is that Mahesh Babu has only one genuine ₹100 crore share movie in his career, yet by strategically maintaining certain websites and influencers, his team pushes the narrative that multiple films have crossed the ₹100 crore share mark. This not only misleads the public but also disrupts the credibility of trade reports.

With Mahesh Babu now teaming up with S.S. Rajamouli, all eyes are on whether his team will continue this practice or allow the film’s success to speak for itself. Given Rajamouli’s reputation for delivering undeniable record-breaking blockbusters, any attempt at inflating numbers might not be as easy this time.

The industry and audiences deserve transparency. It’s time to put an end to misleading box office figures and let real success take the spotlight.
